Approximately 600 middle school students and adult staff and volunteers returned this week from summer camp in East Tennessee. Of that group, several became sick at camp, exhibiting flu-like symptoms, and were treated by medical staff and isolated from the others. More became ill when they returned Wednesday and we are aware of an increasing number of youth and adults being treated for flu or strep. The Long Hollow staff immediately spoke with or left messages with every camper’s family so they might be alert to any symptoms of returning campers. We understand they are all doing well.
The high school camp ended a day early as a precautionary measure and our students arrived Sunday, June 28 at 4:00 PM.
Though Health Department officials whom we contacted did not advise us to do so, out of an abundance of caution, we have made the decision to cancel all Sunday and Wednesday programming this week on all three campuses to safeguard the health of our congregation and guests. We intend to continue with our scheduled July 4 activities and Sunday services on July 5.
In spite of all this, we are encouraged by the great camps we had, with record attendance of over 1200 in both camps combined, and many life-changing decisions by students. We encourage our families to take the opportunity to worship and pray together at home and to continue to pray for those who are sick.
