Books for Young Professionals (comments by Gordon)

The Sampson Syndrome

The Sampson Syndrome by Mark Atterbury
Well written. It's easily "chunked up" so that no one chapter depends on the previous. This, of course, makes it very "friendly" for students who fall behind; you simply take on the current chapter. The book is dead-on with the cultural "male psyche"-our tendencies, hang-ups, etc. It offers practical help and good conversations.

Living the Cross-Centered Life by C.J. Mahaney
Excellent! This book is one of my perennial favorites. When I need a spiritual "alignment," this is where I go. It keeps things simple and focused on the absolute main thing for our daily lives. It will rock your world. It is all about the unending need to see the gospel in all things, every day, and grasping its profound influence on every aspect of our living. Very good.

Louder Than Words by Andy Stanley
Excellent. Easy to read. Very applicable. It centers around all the moving parts of integrity-our character, the thing that God is most interested in for us while we exist on earth. Good anecdotes to start each chapter.

Humility by C.J. Mahaney
Excellent. Attacks the core sin problem in our lives, especially if you are a male: pride!!! It focuses on what 'humility' looks like in some practical ways, and it addresses how humility attracts God's favor - nothing else does.

A Hunger for God

Don't Waste Your Life by John Piper
Text about the book.

Desiring God by John Piper
Deep. Pounding and profound.

A Hunger for God by John Piper
Deals with making God the supreme hunger of your heart and delves into the misunderstandings of 'fasting.' He dwells on the tensions between self-indulgence and self-denial for the purposes of edifying us spiritually.

Stop Dating the Church by Joshua Harris
The premise of our summer retreat. It will convict and excite you about being an active member of a local church and loving others in community the way God intended.

The Spiritual Disciplines by John MacArther
He takes on the spiritual disciplines and what they are and are not. Stable and thought provoking. I could see how this book would be cool for a group of guys to tackle.
