There we met a young couple with a child that is having surgery at Vanderbilt. Attached is the father's email. Jeff, We met this past weekend at the men's retreat and I mentioned I would send you information about my daughter, Naomi. She is going to have surgery on Monday, April 21 to remove a lipoma that is imbedded around her spinal cord. A lipoma is a fatty tumor, but I'm told it isn't a tumor in the normal sense. It is more of a fatty growth, and not a cancerous-type tumor. The location of the tumor is the big problem, in that it is causing her tremendous pain and she can't be held or moved without terrible pain. She is comfortable when she is lying in one position and supported (like on a pillow or in a car seat) so we do our best to minimize her pain. She went to the hospital initially because she had seizures. After the various imaging studies were done we were told that she had suffered a couple of small strokes. That is currently under control with medication, but she has very limited mobility (she doesn't move her arms). No one is sure if the mobility issues are a result of the seizures/strokes or if it is in response to the pain she is feeling. The surgeon's name is Dr. Pearson at Vanderbilt Children's hospital. The risks of the surgery are those that you would expect from a spinal cord surgery. Paralysis is the main one, although he did say that is a low risk (5%). Besides the obvious physical concerns, we would ask you to pray that God would be glorified in this situation and that our faith would be increased. It was a real encouragement to be with so many men this weekend who love Jesus without reservation. He was rushed to the ER Saturday night and it was touch and go all night long. They were finally able to stabilize him. Monday before coming home, I was with dad when he agreed with the hospice nurse to DNR. I'm now second guessing what he said, however, at the time I know he said he was ready to go home and for the pain to stop. I really need some help, help that God will give me the peace that I need to go through this. To ease the guilty conscience that I have because I had to leave and come back home. Dad really wants to come home to pass away, however, they are unable to get his pain medicine regulated and until they do that and dad stabilizes again, he won't be able. To hear my dad beg and plead to please let him go home so he can play his keyboard and be with his dogs, was the hardest thing for me to hear. So, more than anything I want dad to be able to come home. So, please pray with me that dad comes home and passes away comfortably with love surrounding him. And pray for my mom that she will have the comfort that God provides. As, my dad says "to die is to gain". However, it's still the hardest thing I am going through. He has been battling cancer since Dec.(prostate, bone, spine, kidney) He was rushed to the hospital, where they found spots on his lung. They are unable to differentiate between pneumonia and lung cancer. He has a severe UTI which they are trying to treat. however, with a catheter they said this can be common. He can't breathe and will be discharged on oxygen. He is a heavy smoker and is trying really hard with the patch. I was able to talk to mom last night, and she informed me her mom (Lily Butler) was rushed to the hospital in WVA with fluid on her heart and lungs. Mom finally broke last night and for her to be in Ohio and me here in TN it was extremely hard, to not be able to wrap my arms around her and just hold her tight. Please pray that she and dad both can feel God's arms wrapped around them, that the other issues she is dealing will be resolved. He started with a virus and became so dehydrated that his intestines twisted. In the process of x-raying the abdomen, they noticed a mass on his left kidney. It is cancer and they must do surgery ASAP. They said they needed to get the intestinal thing taken care of first which may also require surgery. In the mean time last night he began having heart problems and was moved to ICU. Now everything is on hold. He can not have any surgery until he is stable. He said he knows Jesus and said he is ready to die. I'm afraid this is the beginning of the end unless his attitude changes. He has been battling cancer on and off for the past six years so I know he is tired. The doctor was very positive about the cancer. I know that sounds strange but from the MRI it looks to be contained to the left kidney and removal of the kidney should be all that is required. That is not a promise but the doctor feels confident. Also - pray for Ryan's peace - he is very, very anxious about this because he knows that from now on if he needs any bloodwork or when he has to be sedated he will have to have an IV in his hand - he vividly remembers that very first IV and it is not a good one for him. We received word yesterday that the mother was stopping this process and they would probably lose custody of him right away. He was taken to St. Lukes Hospital Tuesday due to high fever and difficulty breathing. He has fluid around his lungs and heart. At first, they thought he was getting better but yesterday his situation worsened and last night they needle aspirated fluid from around his heart. Doctors are not sure if it's lupus or something worse such as a malignancy of the lymph tissue. They need to examine the fluid to help with their diagnosis. He continues with the fever. His breathing will be helped with the removal of the fluid from around the heart. He is still in St. Lukes children's Hospital in Houston, in ICU. Brian's dad says it's the best hospital in Houston for sick children. Please pray for Cody and for his dad, Keith (Brian's Uncle) and Mother, Terry. Last year my stepfather was diagnosed with a glioblastoma multiforme brain tumor. This type of brain cancer is very aggressive and incurable. He has undergone almost a year of combined chemo therapy, and radiation treatment. Last week his platelet and white blood cell count fell drastically causing his immune system to weaken. This is very dangerous because the slightest exposure to even the mildest cold, flu, etc. could result in a life-threatening illness.
